Friday’s OCC-Capital Division opener between Hayes and visiting Worthington Kilbourne was all about big plays. The Wolves made them … the Pacers didn’t.

Kilbourne set the tone with two first-quarter touchdowns, both of the long-distance variety, then added two one-yard TD runs in the fourth to seal a 35-0 win.

Hayes (2-2, 0-1) looked to be in business early, but couldn’t capitalize after Kilbourne (4-0, 1-0) muffed the opening kickoff.

The Wolves forced a quick punt and were in the end zone three plays later as quarterback Mike Bell-Wheelwright found receiver Daktoa Holtzclaw streaking down the sideline for an 87-yard touchdown.

Bell-Wheelwright made it 13-0 minutes later as he found the end zone from 34 yards out.

Kilbourne ballooned the lead to 21-0 when Josh Stoner scored on a 17-yard TD run and Holtzclaw snagged the ensuing two-point conversion pass midway through the third, then smoothed out the scoring summary with a pair of Isaiah Young touchdown runs in the fourth quarter.

The Pacers had trouble moving the ball all night, managing just 134 yards of total offense. A lack of sustained drives meant a lot of action for punter Noah Watts, though, who stepped up big time. The senior’s eight punts covered 309 yards, helping Hayes flip the field on more than a few occasions. His long was 43.

Deven Ward led the Pacer offense with 40 yards rushing while QB Cullen Moore completed four of his 14 passes for 32 yards.

Young led the Wolves with 107 yards rushing while Stoner added 100 more. Bell-Wheelwright completed eight of his 14 passes for 142 yards and a TD.

Josh Hyatt led the Hayes defense with five tackles while Caleb Naegele had four stops and a team-best two tackles for loss.
