Galena has 2 top-rated schools

Two of the best public schools in Ohio are located in Galena.

This was one of the takeaways from a presentation on the 2014-15 state report cards by buildings, given at the Olentangy Board of Education meeting on Thursday.

Johnnycake Corners Elementary had the highest Performance Index in the state, said Jeanette Kenney, Olentangy’s supervisor of data and assessment. Johnnycake had a 91.6 percent PI, or a letter grade of an A. This was tops among 657 elementary schools in the state. In addition, Scioto Ridge, Tyler Run and Indian Springs were also in the top 10 in the state.

Berkshire Middle School had a PI of 90.3 percent, which is also a letter grade of an A. Kenney said that based on that data, Berkshire was the number two middle school in the state. In addition, Olentangy’s other middle schools — Hyatts, Liberty, Orange and Shanahan — were in the top 20, out of 314 in the state.

Not to be outdone, all three of Olentangy’s high schools were ranked in the top 4 percent in the state based on the Performance Index, she said.

According to the Ohio Department of Education, “The Performance Index is a calculation that measures student performance on the Ohio Achievement Assessments/Ohio Graduate Tests at the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and 10th (OGT) grade levels.”

All 23 of the district’s schools “met every indicator based on Ohio’s state tests,” Kenney said. There were 11 schools that earned an A in Achievement Indicators Met, and 12 schools earned a B. Overall, the district earned a 97 percent, or an A grade.

In terms of progress during the school year, Kenney said all the district’s schools earned an A for all students, as well as gifted students, with Berkshire Middle School tops in the state for gifted.

Another measure, “Gap Closing,” resulted in the high schools earning A’s, the middle schools receiving B’s, and the elementary schools ranged from A to D in grades.

Johnnycakes was one of elementary schools that received a B grade in K-3 literacy. Kenney said no students have been retained due to the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.

Finally, all three high schools reported A grades in the four-year and five-year graduation rates.

While many school districts in the state have had concerns about the state’s changes in its report cards, Olentangy has said they will incorporate the grades into their own self-evaluation.

District and individual school grades will be given in 2018.
