BST&G Fire Chief Jeff Wilson inducted the department’s first three full-time firefighters May 12 during a ceremony in front of family, friends and co-workers.
Last year the fire district added three full-time lieutenants to run full-time shifts with paid volunteer fire fighters working on a paid part-time basis. With last week’s induction ceremony, the fire district now employs three full-time lieutenants and three firefighter/paramedics.
Taking the oath of service from Wilson were firefighters Ian Barney, Trey Whetnall and Nick Kallay.
BST&G stands for Berkshire, Sunbury, Trenton and Galena.
Historically, Sunbury had a fire department dating back to the 1800s. Galena had its own fire department until 1972. All that adjacent townships could do in a fire emergency was depend on their neighbors for help. In 1952, the Berkshire, Sunbury, Trenton Fire District was formed. When the village of Galena fire department dissolved, Galena came on board.
The BST&G Fire District operates out of a facility at 350 W. Cherry St., Sunbury. The building contains a garage, day room, equipment storage areas and office space.
Covering 53 square miles of central-eastern Delaware County, BST&G dispatches through Delaware County 911. The BST&G Fire District’s non-emergency number is 740-965-3841.
